That is exactly my problem leonard. In the past, I have purchased all of my Actinic bulbs from Marine Depot, from their list of CSL bulbs. They come in a vanilla brown box, with no writing on them. These are NOT the same CSL bulbs. Compared side by side, I tell you with 100% confidence, that these are not the same bulbs as the one I just purchased locally. If you look at Marine depot's websit, their "Compact bulbs & DIY parts" link takes you to "CustomSeaLife / Panasonic Style Base Power Compact Bulbs," which is what I buy. Again, NO COMPARISON.

I just got 2 of those CSL Ultra-Actinics about a month ago. Try Champion Lighting, I think they were about 32$ each. HTH

I was caught with my pants down. No spare Actinic bulbs when one of mine popped. All of the MO places I deal with were out, and only one LFS had a 96W Actinic PC bulb. It was the CSL Ultra Actinic 96W PC, and they wanted $60.00

Being my own fault for not having a spare, I begrugingly forked over the 60 beans. When I hooked it up, OH MY GOODNESS Was it BRIGHT

Now, after seing the light, (he he) I need a couple of these so that I don't get caught with my monkey in a wrench again. Where can I buy these without paying $60.00?

I just bought two 10,000k daylight and two true actintic03 96w PC from marinedepot.com for under $150.
$150 / 4 bulbs = $37.50ea.
that's almost a two for one compared to what you just bought...

FFE has all of the CSL stuff, but they are listed as a little more than other places. Have heard that they will match anyones online prices though, just ask for it.

I bought my last replacement PCs from HelloLights and I was happy with the price and service. They are in the LA area so west coast reefers may be able to get faster delivery. I live near LA and my bulbs got to me the next day with just normal UPS ground shipping. The bulbs appear to be generic, not CSL. That doesn't matter to me but some folks may be picky.

I just bought 4x 96watt actinics for my new lighting set-up. They are still in the boxes. Any chance that I can get one of these outfits to exchange the ultras for ones that I have got? I need every bit of actinic juice I can get to balance out 4x 400watt Iwasaki's.

I just purchased one of these bulbs from MarineDepot for like 40.95, this bulb totally blows away the 7100K blue it replaced on my tank.

2x96w PC and 250w 65K MH on a 30gal.= 14.7333 Watts per gal. Aaaaahhh.

Marco:

How do you keep your 30 cool in TX? I have a 30 with 2x96 PC also. I would like to add maybe a 75 (if I could find one) or 175 watt MH to be on for a few hours when I am not home. My tank is in our living room and my wife will not tolerate more light. We keep our house at 78 during the summer and the tank was 82 with just the PC's

24Tom, my house is a little cooler than yours usually about 72 or 73. I never had any problems with the PCs but the hood they were in was open on the top between the bulbs. I actually ran a heater at night to keep the temp from dropping too far.
My new canopy has two 3in fans both blowing in and the whole back is open. Tank runs about 82.
Evaporation is the big problem.

There are only TWO 96W blue bulbs being manufactured at this time. The original Panasonic and the newer Chinese bulb being sold by CustomSeaLife and Coralife. There is no other difference. You will see variances in the Chinese bulb due to very shoddy quality control causing some to be bluer, some to be more actinic-like etc.

Bulbs being sold as "True Actinic" or whatever are just ones culled for the deeper actinic look nothing more.

The differences in the boxes from CSL is just a packaging issue. IF the box is a well built one and "brown" you likely have a panasonic (peel the label off and look underneath on the box) If the box is brown cardboard but of shoddy construction it is of Chinese manufacture. If you have the white box with spectrum and bulb name etc then you likely have a Chinese bulb.

Only chance for getting a Panasonic bulb is by purchasing the 6700K Daylight or a blue (7100k, Ultra Actinic or whatever the marketing flavor of the month is for the blue bulb). If you have an 8800K or 10K or a very deep blue actinic it is going to be of Chinese manufacture.

FWIW the Chinese bulbs have an extremely high return rate due to Quality Control problems - a common return we get is the bulb socket falling off.

IIRC JBJ is a German design manufactured/assembled in China. We've found the Quality of these units to be particularly poor - I will say the customer service has been excellent but I'd rather not have to deal with Customer Service
