Does anyone know where I might get one of these? I have never seen any in the two LFS's i go to down here in CT. I dont want to order an anemone online because I am afraid of what might happen when its shipped. I would like to pair it with some clowns as the center piece to a 50 gallon reef tank. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Oh yeah I forgot tank raised is the other requirement. I have read many posts that say they are much hardier than wild caught.

Ask your LFS to get them in. They are very popular if they get more than one and you take your pick they will probably not have any trouble selling the rest.

They are beautiful, and often split, like the green E. Quads do.

Good luck!

I too searched all around for these anemones with no luck, until I saw some extras pop up at a LFS and grabbed one. They are rare and the LFS said they had a waiting list on them, because their only source was some lady who had them reproducing in her tank. So I guess her anemone split like crazy so I could get a hold of one. Mine just has a tomato clown in it. Cool anemones!

Good luck

Not to get off topic but I really regrete putting a large carpet anemone in my reef tank. He moves around all the time and tramples corals

Thanks for the responses. I have been looking into anemones for a year. I finally feel like my tank and myself are ready to house an anemone. The bubble tip is considered the most hardy if tank raised. I hope to have mine reproduce. I have had the great fortune of having my moroon clowns spawn twice in the last six months. I did not however get to try and raise the young. They hatched and by the time i found out the fry had been eaten.

Go to the LFS and ask for a special order. The ones in NY will get them for a small deposit. They do not appear to have any special requirements up and above the regular ones.

I got mine a while back at Aquarrium Concepts in Hayward, Ca. They had several captive bred in stock for $125 ea. Expensive, but beautiful and hardy. For the record mine has been wandering about the LR a bit. Seems to want to be as high up as possible over my MH. I feed mine pieces of shrimp, silversides, invert formula and brine shrimp once a week. HTH

Holy smokes! $125? I trade my spares to my LFS for $20 credit and he sells them for $60 - and I consider him expensive! I've been very lucky (I think I have the hardiest rose bulb ever imported) - in the 6-7 years that I've had mine I've personally had 30+ clones (I've got 9 clones in my tank now - had only 5 three months ago.....), and now I'm regularly seeing clones of my clones appearing in my LFS, so it's splitting for others too.

A very good anemone, IMO, if you can get one. Good luck!

I have one that has produced several clones. Beautiful red and very healthy. I may be interested in parting with one. I live in Longmeadow MA which is not to far from you. If you keep SPS we could discuss a potential trade.

I only target feed mine occasionally (very) with frozen krill. However, I do feed the tank pretty heavily with Ocean Nutrition's Formula 1, Formula 2, Prime Reef, Enriched Brine, etc.

The tank is a 65 gallon with about 300 watts of VHO. About 70 lbs of live rock, make shift refugium in the rear portion of the tank (a SeaClear System II - used to have a built-in wet/dry in the back, now it's a refugium....), a pair of gold-stripe maroon clowns (this pair hasn't spawned yet, they've been together about a year, since the original female died, and I bought another juvenile to take the male's place (since he became a she)), a purple tang, red sea purple pseudochromis, and a yellow watchman goby/pistol shrimp pair. I used to keep corals in this tank, but the reproductive habits of the anemones have pretty much turned this into a species tank.

Wow thanks for all the information. Anemone do your moroon clowns hang out in the anemone? Did they take a while before they decided to use it as their host? Just curious i have a pair of moroons as well.

My maroons literally dove into the anemones within a few minutes of being placed in the tank. Conversely, I've had ocellaris ignore BTAs completely for months and instead snuggle up to frogspawn within a day or two of adding it to the tank - go figure.

My Maroon clown took to this anemone in less than 10 minutes flat:

just got this little guy from Aquarium Concepts also.

Bad pic though...had to use the flash on the camera because just the actinics were on in the tank.
