I'm setting up a 180 gallon and will need lots of LR! What is the best type of base rock I can use as a foundation for my other LR? I've already got about 150 lbs of Fiji/Vanisi/Marshall Island rock, and am thinking about using red volcanic rock as a base. It is very porous and light, and seems like it would work well. Has anyone ever used this before, or know of something better?

Thanks!

i think you should be careful about volcanic rock, as some of it has very high metal (iron, ??) content..

a safer (more expensive) alternative, but probably even more porous, would be Tufa rock. you can probably find a place to buy it in bulk on the 'net, or maybe even direct from the manfacturer.

i have some of this stuff, and after about a year, it actually looks better than the 'real' LR!

it's extremely porous.
