Sure you can gravity feed it, but I'm sure it won't be able to handle the flow rate you're currently getting from your overflows. You'll either have to use a separate overflow to feed it, or throttle back your circulation pump.

I have it, and it seems to do a good job on my 125. It takes a bit to get it dialed in, but seems to pull pretty good running on a pump not gravity fed.

Here are some pics of it in action on the 2nd and 3rd day. The foam was a bit wet, but have since fixed it. I bought it used off this board.

This is a great skimmer, as long as it is properly maintained. The venturi seems to get clogged fairly easily, but is also very easy to clean. IMO it is much better then a Remora Pro, which I also have. To keep the turboflotor running smoothly, just take a cup of hot water and let the venturi suck up all the water. Do this once a week, and it'll dissolve all the calcium and salt buildup in the venturi and run like a champ.

Yes you can gravity feed it. If you do, you'll need to tee off your drain and add a gate valve (not ball valve) to control the amount of flow going through it. I like this setup better then feeding it with a powerhead (mj600 recommended). One less pump in the system, and the water the overflow pulls is usually dirtier (i.e. the surface film goes directly to the skimmer).

BTW, get the one with the RIO 2100. And I have heard no reported cases of this RIO pump melting down in non pressure rated applicatione, only when continually turned on and off w/wavemakers, and used as a return pump from the sump.

Skimmer-hunting...

This seems like a good skimmer at a decent price. Should I buy it?

I have heard that you can gravity-feed this, is that true, or do you lose a lot of effectiveness?

I agree with ecoReefers. On my 75G, the skimmer is gravity fed. You may need to adjust the return pump flow, as the Turbofloater requires a certain water level in the skimmer to produce dry foam. BTW- fish_who?'s pictures show a modified version of the Turboloater .
