I heard that feed shops sell Hydrated Lime and I heard on this message board it is the same as Pickling lime, but I was wondering if any ppl have had success with it and what brand they are using.

I've been using Hoffman Hydrated Horticultural Lime since around April. I was using Reef Evolutions Kalkwasser before the lime. I was having a low alk problem since mid summer, recently been corrected with Seachem Reef Builder. I'm not sure if the lime caused this or not. I'm more in belief that it was other factors in my tank and not the lime.

I read that lime for bringing up soil pH, and marking ball fields etc. is not as refined and contains more potentially toxic impurities than food grade lime, . I don't know for sure if this is true, but just in case, I use food grade lime.

Seems to me, that as cheap as pickling lime is, it's not worth it to chance something designed to be used with manure.

Pickling lime is not available around here so I use Beachville's Hydrated Lime, and have been using it on my 350g+ for many years now.

The only reason I have looked into hydrated lime is because I cant find the food grade stuff anywhere. Anyways I got a bag of "Colton lime" and will try it out. I heard that some people have experienced algae problems with the non food grade stuff, but nothing major.

Any other users of the hydrated lime?

I used it for at least a year; was good for my SPS, good for coralline, no algae problems that I noticed. I will resume using it as soon as I get my tank back from my parents' house.
