I have a couple of questions. I have to move my tank (36x12x20) and will use the opportunity to change to a DSB using southdown. Right now, I have ~ 70lbs of southdown in a covered tub with ten gallons of water and one raw shrimp. I plan on leaving it there for two weeks, stirring the sand twice a day, as best I can. After two weeks, I will discard the water and the shrimp and add the sand to the moved tank.

1. Do I need to add a small powerhead to the tub with the southdown and the shrimp? The tub is already beginning to stink.

2. I have a cleaner shrimp and 5 hermits. I plan to leave the shrimp and three very small hermits in the tank, but, remove the two larger hermits during the move. Will the remaining shrimp and 3 small hermits adversely affect the new DSB?

I don't think so. I would recommend adding one bag of live sand. When I did my conversion, I had a bloom. The live sand took care of that.

Thanks fishead. Much of the live sand available to me here in Newfoundland is no different than what I am going to have when finished with the Southdown. So, I think I might purchase an additional few peices of live rock to throw in on conversion and get some extra critters that way.
