Just bought a large purple gorgonian too big to find a good spot for it. Can they be broken in two safely without dying? Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Youll find almost any thing can be fragged. This is the best way for gorgs. Find a rock with a nice hole in it or drill a hole in one. Cut off the branch to be fragged. Use a knife to strip off about 1" of the tiisue covoring the center "root" of the gorgonia. Then stick this into the hole in the rock. Either epoxy it there or fill the hole with super glue before putting the "root" it the hole. On my purple ribbon the center branch is very thin so be careful not to cut it as you strip the tissue.
Yes; gorgonians can be fragged using the same methods as those applied for soft corals. Use a clean, sharp pair of scissors to make the incision. Mount with either epoxy or lodge it securely within a hole.
IMO the problem with mounting most gorgs with the tissue not being stripped first is they can rot. Once the tissue is encased in epoxy or lodged in a rock it may rot and become unattached. When you strip the tissue to the skeleton first you get a much better hold.
Gorgonians are fairly easy to frag, one thing to take note of.. if it doesn't appear to be growing much, it may be having difficulty acquiring food in your tank and the cutting and the cutting site will be more prone to recession than growth. Not trying to be discouraging.. just something to look for ahead of time.
