Hi, I am presently troubled by the heat emitted from my new PCs. They seem to affect the temperature of my tank pretty much, and has gone up to 88-90F, needless to say my corals dont welcome the heat too well. The bulbs are now presently about 5inches away from the water surface. Would like to get an opinion from some of you how high the lights should be if I wish to bring down the temperature to about 84-86F, and yet still not lose the effectiveness of the light. Sorry I still cant figure out where to install fans,I really dont wish to install them if i could help it.Thanks!

Use fans.
You want the lights as closs as possible w/o water splasher or excess heat. The intensity drops off fast when the lights are too far off the water. I built a little wooden bracket that fit snugly over the lip of my tank and used zip ties through the screw holes in the fan. This allows me to have a fan w/o modifying the hood. It sets on the back of the tank and works great. If you mount it at a downward angle, so it blows directly on the water, you will get greater evaporation and cooling.
Good Luck

Get a little high rpm fan from radio shack meant for cooling a cpu. Adapt it as needed. Mabey a transformer will be needed. Then lace fan between tank top and lighting unit. And place those PC's as close as possible with a peice of glass or plexi over top of tank to stop splashing. The Lights should not be touching the glass or plexi at all obviously. Air should be able to flow through. This method works excellent on my 90 Gal, so watch the temp so it does not get too low

Are you sure it is your PC's?? I had 2x65W on my 55G 2" off the water and they didn't heat up squat! How many bulbs do you have? Where did you place the ballast? what is the ambient temp? (Room temp) Anything else that could be causing the heat?

Radio shack has some 110 AC fans that all you need to do is wire them to a plug.
