Loud Overflow

I brought this up once before, and everyone suggested a Durso Standpipe, but my setup does not allow me to do that very easily.

Does anyone foresee any problems with filling the overflow 1/2 way with live rock rubble? The bulkhead is drilled on the side, not the bottom.

Go ahead, I would then put some foam over it to quiet the noise.

Depends on if it will be out of sight, but you know that "eggcrate" material you can put under a mattress?....if you wrap that around the pipe and every conceiveable place there is noise, it may cut back a lot. Kinda like a recording studio effect where the foamed walls "absorb" all the sound...or like a room sounds hollow until you put furniture in it. Just don't get it wet, messy to clean up. My guess is that most of your noise is from the water falling down the pipe and not from the actual overflow itself...but...hey...give it a try. It's a cheap solution.
