As is the case with my monthly carbon treatment,I went to the lfs to purchase some GAC to clean up some DOC,but was recommended this product...never used it in place of carbon, have used poly filters before, does anyone have experience with this product, anything I should know that isn't printed on the(rather vague)label? How does it differ from regular carbon in it's usage? Thanks in advance

Yeah,I run carbon about 3 days a month on my tank, just curious if it is used the same as carbon, whether it will perform the same way, what it takes out of the water,etc...haven't heard anything about it. Thanks,Joey

I believe that the resins will remove the same stuff as the carbon, but it also will deplete trace elements. The packaging makes it sound basically like an RO/DI unit for saltwater, and it makes some other claims as well.

Chemi pure is supposed to filter out all the impurities of your water. It utilizes activated carbon and resins. It is not supposed to leach things back into your water column, but you never know. I use it on my system periodically and it seems to do a good job.

Seachem has a similar product called Purigen.

It repalces carbon and (so they say) has minimal impact on trace elements.

This can be recharged once exhausted in a solution of bleach.

I've been trying it for a couple of months - it seems to work.

After removing my carbon and adding this I noticed that I no longer needed to add iodide in massive quantities.

Seachem's webpage said that this product reduces nitrate - on querying this they say it does this indirectly by removing the products that lead to nitrate formation i.e. their product does not remove nitrate at all...

However, I did try using a whole container of Purigen in a small volume of nitrate laden water and the level of nitrate did drop alot over a period of two hours - so it has *some* ability to reduce nitrate. I think this ability is very small though - my tank has stayed at around 2.5 mg/l nitrate ever since I added the Purigen

i have used the product along with another called Bio-Chem Zorb periodically over a period of years

The ionic scavenger resins are supposed to remove toxic chemicals (i.e.ammonium nitrite) from the water

I have no complaints about this product but I usually only add it when either when i want to polish my water (it does make water crystal clear) or when my kids have decided to overfeed my tank as a backup to my biological filtration

I had the same question, so I cut open one of the bags. It looks like carbon mixed with a little bit of DI resin. The resin beads had already turned brown after being in my filter for only a week. Bummer.

Joey, Chemipure has been around for a long time. I venture to quess longer than any of the above responders have been keeping corals. You can use it as you would carbon IME without problems.

You can leave it in for a while, the packaging says up to 6 months. At some point, the filtering capabilities of any absorption product will be exhausted, and it depends on your bioload in your tank.

I have had a bag in the return section of my bakpak skimmer for well over a two weeks I will probably leave it there for at least another two weeks or til i feel like fishing it out.
I added it after i overfeed the tank in an attempt to catch a sallylightfoot and the extra food caused some elevated levels.
I think it is a good product as well and say you can leave it in as long as you feel it is still working. The pakaging says 6 months as posted above but I would imagine it has decreasing effectiveness over time.
But man will it polish your water I would use it more often if it was cheaper
