Kalkwasser is a saturated solution of calcium hydroxide (calcium oxide can also be used). It's made by dissolving 1-2 teaspoons of calcium hydroxide in fresh (preferably RO) water. Most people let the mixture settle for several hours and then siphon off the clear liquid (leaving the undisolved powder behind) and then SLOWLY dripping or dosing this liquid into the aquarium. The solution will have approx. 800 ppm calcium and a pH of 12+. Because of the high pH it's necessary to add it slowly.

As far as negative side effects, there really aren't any as long as it's used properly.

that being said, it is better to drip over night than during the day?

And, is it as simple as that? One could get an iv dripper/bubbler, set bubble rate, and leave?

Of course, monitor the levels and make adjustments.

I also dose 24/7 w/ both Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime & also Baking soda (a PH & ALK buffer - mixed 6/1 baked to unbaked) - my PH & Calcium is pretty darn good.

I also do makeupwater when I do major changes at a 2/1 ration of this high concentrated mix - otherwise I just cannot keep up the Calcium & PH. I change water often.

Mrs. Wages can be ordered mail order directly from here at a reasonable cost -

oddball,

Yes, it is that simple. Some people drip it only at night for that reason. I drip 24/7, but have a reverse daylight refugium to compensate for pH swings.

I personally prefer to dose kalkwasser over a 24 hour period, and I use a LiterMeter to add it so it's quite easy for me to do. Some people of course do like to drip it overnight when their pH is lowest which helps keep pH more stable. Really as long as you aren't affecting your SG or pH quickly their is no harm in using either method. Many people use the IV dripper method and it works just fine.

*How much kalk powder do you add per gallon of replacement water?

I use 1-2 teaspoon/gal.

*How much pickling powder do you add per gallon of replacement water?

I use 1-2 teaspoon/gal.

*If you add baking soda, how much do you add per gallon of replacement water?

I don't use it, so don't know

*I thought the kalkwasser adds Ca and buffer to the system? Why add the baking soda then?

Don't know this either

*If one drips klak, do you have to add those 2 part additives I hear about and what for? What are they anyways?

I use pickling lime to give a little boost to the Ca level ( 2-3 times a week). But I still use b-ionic daily.

Keep adding the Kalk to the RO water until there is a little sediment left in the bottom. Let the liquid stand then draw off the clear(er) liquid and drip over night (keep up ph). Try to keep the liquid sealed as it "goes off by contact with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Since am fairly new to this and I haven't had to add this yet, let me ask more specificly:

*How much kalk powder do you add per gallon of replacement water?
*How much pickling powder do you add per gallon of replacement water?
*If you add baking soda, how much do you add per gallon of replacement water?
*I thought the kalkwasser adds Ca and buffer to the system? Why add the baking soda then?
*If one drips klak, do you have to add those 2 part additives I hear about and what for? What are they anyways?
Thanks,

Alberto
