Easily the most beautiful reef tanks I have ever seen, at least in terms of color. Did abyone notice all the purple Dendronepthyea in some of those tanks? I wonder how long they have had those, especially because it looks like the tanks are heavily filtered.

Hi all

Did I see flood lights in the first pic?

Indeed you did. If you look at the outside of the spotlight reflectors, you will also notice reflections of magenta colored light.

My guess is that they are using colored MH spots to "enhance" color.

ANyone else have any sites of Japanese reefs ? It's giving me alot of great idea for my new 75 and 65 g tanks!

I'm thinking of not adding so much live rock and using egg crates design the liverock.

Thanks!

I really like the high quality HQI spots. It would be nice to be able to find a source for these. I've been looking around a little but if anybody knows a direct reference...? I've looked at a few translated German commercial sites, but the translation software works only okay on technical terms and finding lighting information especially when I don't know exactly what I'm looking for can be .... err.... interesting.

Also, on a few of these tanks I'm seeing some kind of clear or slightly opaque top which covers up the cut-outs. I've been looking for something like this that would work fine with MH, but keep adventuresome fish from taking a leap.

Last question (I promise! Ignore the crossed fingers behind my back!) I keep seeing a certain schooling silver fish which looks like some sort of cardinal fish. Some have a red dot on the side. I love the way these look in a medium size school. If anyone knows what type of fish these are, or where I can get them, please let me know!

Oh, and another thing....

I have to admit these tanks are beautiful. OMG the colors!!! BUT...where's the coralline? Seems like in tanks with that much SPS they would also have a booming coralline population. Why are the pumps perfectly clean? Where are the inevitable feather dusters? Do they use LR like the rest of us?

The color on some of these corals is almost unreal. Maybe they enhance with colored lighting as previously mentioned? Or even black lights to get the colors to POP? My son has a black light. Maybe I'll try it ;-)

Seriously though, are these corals grown in prop tanks and then moved to 'show' tanks for a photo shoot or are they really prop'd in these tanks?

Anyone know?

BTW, I am setting up a new 75g reef and plan to use the open rock look inspired by these and other 'bonsai' tanks I have seen.

Can't resist, they are gorgeous!

Tanu: thanks for the info on the Apogon parvulus. I'm not interested in any fish that have a high mortality rate in captivity. Ethics outweigh aesthetics!

Extensive coralline algae growth and dirty sand is a sign of a tank that has aged......

They almost seem fake on first inspection.

The Japanese make better cars, run a country that is 300% more energy efficient, have a higher productivity rate, score among the top in the world among student performance, and now they even keep reefs better than us.

It seems we could learn a lot from them.

Beautiful colors and all, but of course I always look for what could go wrong

.

I think that the pics were of systems just after they had been set up, and in the mechanical picture, I don't like seeing electrical outlets underneath joints and fittings where water could drip on them.

Those mechanical layouts took a LOT of planning and time to set up! Obviously by someone very committed to his or her reef.
I'm a little leery though, after seeing some FO tanks that were stocked just as full, for looks only. They've got a different philosophy over there.

I could be wrong,but I doubt it.
I work with glass and have received thousands of flyers and catalogs for my buis. and would have to say that most of them have been TOUCHED UP so maybe the same thing is going on here.
