I assume this polyp will split into 3 seperate polyps? This is a FL ricordia polyp that is orange with a flourescent green mouth, but now it has 3.

I could be about to split. I suppose it's possible it's deformed too. I have some xenia, and one of the polyps is deformed. The arm is normal, but the polyp on the end is extra large. The fingers on one side of it pulse together, and the fingers on the other side pulse together, but the two sides are independent of each other. Looks kind of like siamese twins. Then there's one extra long finger right in the middle that doesn't pulse at all, just sticks straight up. I'd say most likely your polyp is about to split, just thought i'd throw out my observation that corals can sometimes grow deformed too.

Boss_512:

To let you know, Eric H. Borneman's new book, Aquarium Corals : Selection, Husbandry, and Natural History touches a bit on Florida Ricordia. It is my first coral book and I am very pleased with it.

I have a green one that I got during a mail trade. It's got 3 mouths. I haven't given it much thought though. Maybe I'll try and feed it tonight and see if I can get it to split/bud in the near future.

HI MIke,
your Ricordea is going to split into three polyps, lucky guy. If you watch, you will notice increasing indentations along the sides of the poly, sort of a "pinching" appearance, until the polyps completely separate. Ricordea is not as fast growing as other corallimporphs, but it will continue to grow as yours is. They will eat small particles of food, and will curl up into a little ball sometimes after eating.Orange are pretty rare compared to the green ones.

Enjoy them!

Yes you're right. After the lights turn off, some of my ricordeas fold in like marbles. BTW, what's the best food for them?

Small chunks of raw shrimp seem to be irrisistable to Ricordea. Feeding mine every couple days, I managed to have 1 polyp split into 9

in about 8 months.

raw shrimp huh

i have a ricordia (green) that i cut from a buddies tank...looked terrible in the 55gal and now it is in my 10gal nano and starting to grow. starting to color up to light green and neon pink mouth. it is growing in size but slowly.

i tried feeding it some coral heaven from IPSF and it liked it but it is so small...less than a quarter (coin) size. should i give him a little piece of shrimp soaked in zoecon?

thanks
