Fellow Aquarists,

Announcing the Premier Issue of Advanced Aquarist's Online Magazine

www.advancedaquarist.com

We are pleased to announce a new magazine dedicated to furthering the aquarium hobby. This publication is a collaboration between reefs.org and Terry Siegel - the founder and backbone of Aquarium Frontiers. In keeping with the strict standards of accuracy and fact-checking that Terry Siegel brought to Aquarium Frontiers, Craig Bingman has again been enlisted as the magazine's Science Editor. To insure accuracy and detail, we have set up a Peer Review panel.

Our current list of regular authors includes (in no particular order):

Craig Bingman
Terry Siegel
Randy Holmes-Farley
Richard Harker
Eric Borneman
Rob Toonen
J. Charles Delbeek
Julian Sprung
Doug Robbins
Randy Donowitz
Greg Schiemer
Sanjay Joshi
Martin Moe
Frank Marini
Dana Riddle

You can also expect to see material from many other new leading authors and hobbyists.

The magazine is published on the web in conjunction with reefs.org and is 100% supported by our advertisers making the magazine open to everyone, to the betterment of the hobby as a whole. Sincere thanks go to our sponsors for supporting reefs.org and now Advanced Aquarist. Welcome to our new sponsors, and to thanks to the others for supporting us so that we can grow.

Lastly, I'd like to recognize our Authors. Thanks for putting your faith in us and helping start this fledgling magazine with a bang!

Sincerely,
James Wiseman

Is there any way we can download the whole mag as a PDF or something so we can print it?

P.S. nice mag, good to see a magazine that doesn't have articles like "how to set up a marine aquarium", but then i suppose that woudln't be an advanced aquarist, DOH! cant wait for the next one, loved the piece on predatory corals. I have allways thought that these corals would be perfect candidates for FOWLR (FOWLR&PNPC) systems, especially as they taste so bad.

Hi Mouse,

Currently, the magazine is "optimized for the web." The digital revolution is here and we want to take every advantage of it. We'll consider your request, although it would take a lot of work to reformat - it would be nice to have.

Just because the magazine is titled Advanced Aquarist doesn't mean that we won't have good information for beginners. Look for upcoming columns by Randy Donowitz (who used to write Reefkeeping 101 for AF) and others.

Cheers
James Wiseman

Great Articles..... This is a wonderful Achievement. Fantastic Reading!

But....

Is it just me and my ageing eyes, or do others think that the line at the top of the pages containing quick jumps to "Home - Table of Contenets - Forums - Search - Archives - reefs.org" is a bit fuzzy and out of focus?

I also find the logo image of the angle overlayed by the Title is out of focus as are many other titles that are actually gifs.

I think they are supposed to be a bit blurry

They are. The intent was to try and get a watercolors-like effect. If it turns out to be an issue for a lot of folks, though, I'm open to changing it.

It's your old eyes Brian...that's why you have to take all those fantastic macro shots...you can't see your corals close up!

All kidding aside, it's artistic license. Each publication has their own individual style, and this is a part of ours. Here's another picture of our "mascot" the French Angel - P. paru

Server problems - most likely bandwidth related. Keep trying it will resolve in a few hours I'm sure.

I too vote for a PDF version - many people find reading online to be very tedious including myself. However the added work may be too difficult. I haven't played with printing the current version yet - but like with AF I used to print out all the good articles and organized them in a binder called "Internet Reference" which we have in our Library here at the store so that we can point things out like Shimek's Temp and Salinity article to customers.

And, of course, there's nothing stopping interested aquarists from copying the text into Word or Pagemaker, etc. and simply adding in the pictures. Not terribly difficult or time consuming, especially for 4-5 articles per month. It won't look like a professional magazine, but as a reference it would be fine.

Josh

P.S. I haven't been able to read all of it yet, but what I've read so far looks great.

We are going to put all back issues of the magazine in the AAOLM Archives. So if it's a reference you want...they will ALWAYS be there, as long as you have access to the web.

Plus, by combining the archives with our search feature, you should be able to find what you are looking for much quicker than thumbing through a stack of printouts. Gentlemen, we have the technology...

Remember, one of our missions for the magazine is to take advantage of ALL that the internet has to offer.

Cheers

If I could make a recommendation or a suggestion - for the featured aquarium, it would be nice if the pictures actually linked to the larger version of the picture instead of the index page.

Secondly, an author bio section would nice to have; although we generally know most of the people.

Great work everyone!
