I have had a yellow mimic tang for about a month. I just noticed that when you see him in the light it almost looks like he is getting blotched on his skin. They are like the yellow is fading in spots. At times it looks like it might be getting better and then it might look worse. I am feeding it seaweed selects. The pieces last several hours and I end up putting about two in for the day. I also feed flake food and some frozen food that I feed the other fish. I think he is getting enough greens but I don't know why his color is looking faded. By the way he has gained weight since I bought him.

My tangs will lighten themselves up when they get ready to visit or have just finished visiting my cleaner shrimp. Do you have any cleaner shrimp in the tank? That could be the case with yours.

I feed my tangs the Seaweed Select, Formula 2, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and spirulina flake. I have read that spirulina algea is a big part of a tangs diet. You may want to consider adding that to it's diet.

I suspect the same thing as Chucker. FWIW, my Chevron Tang is currently undergoing metamorphasis from juvenile to adult chromatism. There are distinct color "blotches" that are expressed several times throughout the day. Although it looks unsettling, it's more then likely nothing to worry about.

The fish is still pretty small so I don't nkow if it is changing color yet. When the light is behind hem is when you see it the most. If he is behind he looks very yellow. I do feed it with a clip and leave green ocean nutrition Algea. I put a 2" by 3" peice in twice a day.

What is the size of your tank and the water conditions?
In addition to what has already been posted,
fish sometimes get a 'coating' when conditions are not right. It may be a touch of fungus.
Try soaking all dried foods in selcon for a while and see if its appearance improves.

Am=0, nitrite=0, and nitrate=10. Where do you get the selcon. At the present moment he is in a 55 gallon while my 75 gallon is stabalizing. I do not want to put him in there untill he will be OK. There is a lot of hair algae and hope he will eat it when I put him in there.

Your nitrates are a little high if you are keeping coral.
Selcon is a vitamin conconction which you can buy from a LFS. There are other brands too but I cannot remember their names.
A 50 is too small for any tang. Try to get it to the 75 when things stabilize. Most reefers recommend a 5 foot tank as tangs require the swimming room.(100+ gallons)
Arrange your rock so there is a clear 'swim path' from end to end and place a powerhead in the pathway and an air diffuser in a corner (not near coral or sponge). Tangs like both the water movement and high oxygen levels.
I think when the tang is happier and the use of selcon or similar, the colouring will improve.

The 55 he is in is a fish only with crushed coral and I will be moving him to a 75 with a sand bottom that will have corals but does not at the time. What foods can be soaked in the selcon. Flakes, the dried algae before I put it in the tank?? I saw the web sight where you can feed live brine shrimp it. I have not done this before and could you some help with it.
