Anyone have the Nikon Coolpix 995? I currently have a Sony Mavica FD83 and don't like the close-up pix that it takes. I want to be able to take high quality close ups of my corals. Any suggestions or recommendations for digital cameras would be greatly appreciated.

Just got mine last week. I love it. There is a 100 dollar mail in rebate with NIKON to so it is only 600 bucks with shipping after the rebate.

I have some pics of my tank on this site the last 2 pics are from the new camera the rest are from 35 mm http://communities.msn.com/reefaquariumsecrets/alexstank.msnw

just click on the pics it will bring them up on the screen. They were medium quality shots but I liked them.

Alex - Cool pix! Did you get the mantis on purpose or as a hitchhiker?

As far as the camera, you seem very pleased with it. Is it easy to use? How's the battery life?

I'm also looking at the Sony MVC-FD95. There are so many digitals out there that it's hard to decide on one! Thanks for your input!!!

Yea I was looking at cameras for a few months. My dad has used Nikon for a long time without problems so I looked into them a bit more. What is really nice is the fact that the cool pix cameras take additional lenses. Hardly any digital cameras take additional lenses unless you want to spend over a 1000 bucks. The operation is good and user friendly. The book that comes with it has pretty good instructions. I must say if you want the options to adjust everything you can do it in manual mode. Or let Auto do it for you. I used manual for my aquarium pics so I could change the ISO to 800. The battery life is good I would say the rechargeable gave me about 80-100 min before it died completly. Over all it is a good camera. Look on yahoo.com for the 995 thats where I got mine. They have good prices there.

The mantis was no accident I bought him and I take the free ones I get at work. I work at the LFS if you did not guess already.

I bought the 995 but was not comfortable with it.
All of the features on the 995 were oustanding and being a photographer and a Nikon user I fealt that the 995 was a good choice.

I did not however, like the feel and style of the camera. I prefer a more traditional 35mm style.
I returned the Nikon and purchsased a Canon G1.
Although the Macro is not as nice as the Nikon I am pleased with the camera.
Like the Nikon, it will take supplimentary lenses.

Do a google for Steves Digicams.
Great site for camera's.
He even said that you will either love or hate the Nikon.
Well I dont hate it but for that kind of cash I want to be comfortable with the camera and the Nikon just didn't feel right

Just picked up the Olympus 3040T. It is awsome. Before this camera I had the CoolPix775. I like the feel of the Olympus. PLus the 1.8 low light lens is outstanding. Just my thoughts. I also picked it up for 545.00. on sale at Circuit City.

hi.
I have a CP990, and it is great for taking pic of close-ups. I used it to document the recovery of coral after fragging and growth.

Matt, I live about 5 miles away...

I have an Olympus C-3000Z that I LOVE! It's one of the only $$ purchases that I've made recently in which I'm $100% happy with it. It's macro feature works pretty good for closups, and you can add different magnifiers, macro lenses, and filters. As I recall, the reason I picked it over the Nikon was that it had considerably better low light performance and used standard AA batteries. I've found that if I use MH rechargeables that the battery life is very long. I bought my camera about a year ago so I'm sure Olympus has even better models at even lower prices available now.
Be sure to check out www.dcresource.com and www.stevesdigicams.com before deciding on your final purchase.
