Hi all,

Just updated my site with a few more select images including some nice macros.

http://reef.esmartweb.com/

Here is a pink echinopora I picked up recently. It was a drab coloration when I first got it:

John, it's a beauty. But I don't think it's echinopora, but rather echinophyllia. In fact, I'm almost sure of it between the knobs, the fleshy outer layer, and the large mouths. The growth edge is a good way to tell, too. In echinopora, it's a lot like any plating montipora; flat and hard. In echinophyllia, it's soft and fleshy when expanded, hard and tight to the skeleton when it's not.

I've also seen that exact some coloration on echinophyllia (I owned one for three years with that coloration), but never on echinopora.

For comparison's sake, here's a small piece I gave to Joe Kelley a year ago that's growing out for him:

After looking at another of your pics of it on your site....

...yeah, no question. It's echinophyllia. The growth edge on that is unmistakeable

If it's any consolation, I had thought for awhile that mine was echinopora as well. It wasn't until I got a frag of Tyree's blue echinopora and was able to compare the two side-by-side that I realized what very different corals they were.

Your experiences you describe with yours are very similiar to mine, especially in regards to looking plain at first but coloring up dramatically without requiring much light. Two pieces of advice: one, they can put out monstrous sweepers when they want to (I observed sweepers over 8" long in mine), and two, be careful when you handle it. It may have just been a reaction on my part, but I found myself sensitised to these species -very- quickly, to the point that I couldn't handle it without real discomfort.

And let me know if you ever want to frag it

Hi Charles,

Yes thanks for the correction. Thanks for the tips as well. If anyone sees something similar at an LFS and just looks plain ugly, well....don't miss out.

Thanks again Charles and yes when it does recover I'll reserve a piece for ya. You still want to speak at our club (SEABay) sometime?

Charles is correct. It is Echinophyllia. Interestingly, I have one that encrusts and is forest green.

Yes it looks just like the Echinophillia pink thing. It is growing good now. I have one in each tank in hopes that it might take off. Not a fast grower IMO. What is your sunday like Charles?
Drop me an e-mail.

Hi Terry,

The problem is that "Webshots" will not let you like to pictures on their site. They try to make people actually go there to look at their ads, etc.

You can always upload your photos to our brand new "cadillac" server. Just email it to me or Charles.

Cheers
James

Joe:
Let me know if you want the skeleton of a coral that I said is similar to the one in your tank. As I said, I got it from Robert, and I believe he got it from Charles or somebody else... Sounds like it is identified without mailing the skeleton out.

Ching, if by Robert you mean Robert Becker, yeah, he had a piece of mine.

Joe, sunday's cool if you're coming out my way. Otherwise I can't make it out to you that day. Busy weekend.

Oh, and John, cool on the frag

As for SEABay, if I ever manage to plan another trip up that way I'll let you know. I -might- manage it this summer, but it's way up in the air right now.

Yes, it is R. Becker's. I got most of his "leftovers" after he decided to scale down. I put it in my office, and it turn out to be a bad idea. The weekend temp. went up to 85F, and I found the bare skeleton the following week. It was the only causalty, but I brought a chiller there so that it should be no problem in the future.

Your A. mill. changed color again. The base used to be nice green, now is bluish like the tips.
