All,
Finally got around to installing all new
cartidges on my RO/DI filter and what I found
in the spun polypropylene pre filter nearly made
me lose my lunch. A new prefilter is pure white
and you can see in the photo that the year old one is slimy brown with how-know-what growth on it. I suspect that some kind of bacterial has been multiplying on this prefilter for months. So, I encourage all of you with RO units to replace those prefilters at once and more often then once a year lest your RO gets clogged with dead bacteria or worse it passes through!!

Nasty Old Pre Filter

Do you have clear canisters? If not, you may want to look into some as it is very easy to tell the state of your pre-filter; you just look.

Monkeyboy,

You got that one right!

I'm looking around for some cheap, clear
canisters now. Will probably cheap HomeDepo
later this weekend. I must tell you I was
rather surprised to find such a brown, slimmy
mess when I unscrewed the prefilter.

Later...

Where is a good place to buy cartridges cheap? I found prefilters at HD, $7 for 3... Can't seem to find cartridges though. Where do you usually buy yours?

Umm....you're supposed to change the prefilter at least every six months, depending on source water quality.

The biggest problem is if you dont change the carbon prefilter, the clorine in the tap water can destroy your membrane if it is a TFC membrane.
