I thought I would take this opportunity to share with you all my first (and last) livestock ordering experience from Flying Fish Express.

Three days ago, I noticed a listing of "Sri Lankan Nigripes Clownfish" on their Collector's Corner website. I ordered these, along with three of their Red Ricordea which they also were offering. Incidentally this was the fourth time I tried ordering from FFE's collector's items list. The three previous times, I would call in, confirm with the salesperson that the item was in stock, only to receive a call at 4:30p.m. every single time informing me that the item was, in fact, not in stock (but that's a whole other story which I will not get into).

Upon completion of the order, I was excited because I would finally be receiving a shipment of livestock. The next morning, when I checked the FFE website, I noticed curiously that they had added a label of "restricted species" designation to the Nigripes clownfish that I had just ordered. The label was not there the day I ordered it (I have witnesses to confirm this). Now slightly worried about what I would be getting, my worries were confirmed when the shipment arrived. The clownfish had lost most of its coloring, its fins were tattered, and there was evidence of a fungal infection on its fins and underside. The three red ricordea were not red, but in fact orange (I have other orange ricordea in the tank). Moreover, 90% of the short tentacles characteristic of ricordea were missing.

I placed them all in the tank, hoping that the clownfish might survive, because if it didn't I figured I would be out the $40 I paid for it. Sure enough, this morning the clownfish died (less than 24 hours after receiving it). Fortunately the sickness did not spread to the other fish in the tank.

As a result my girlfriend (Jessica) decided to call FFE to voice her concerns about the ricordea and the clownfish. She asked to speak to the salesperson's superior, which happened to be the owner, Don Burdick. The conversation started out normally but soon escalated into a heated argument, in which Mr. Burdick told my girlfriend that she was "delirious" and to "shut up". Needless to say this only incensed Jessica more. Mr. Burdick's only argument was that the fish was a "restricted species", and thus basically told her that he "didn't need to take this from her".
Mr. Burdick finally agreed to refund the credit for the fish.

Is it possible that FFE, upon seeing that their lot of Nigripes clownfish were all ill, slapped on a Restricted Species designation just to cover their own backsides? If so, I think that's very VERY dishonest business conduct.

Needless to say, I will never be a customer of FFE. I feel that we were treated both rudely and dishonestly. It has basically been the worst buying experience of my life. Apparently FFE feels that they do not need to cater to a single customer because their business is so large.

Has anyone else had similar experiences with FFE, or am I alone on this?

Bummer. Sounds like dishonesty to me, unless the clown had a fight with the bag on the way over, fish don't get tattered fins and fungus on the way over. That's good that you got credit though, hopefully it's not store credit!

Good luck with future endeavors, you "delirious" reefer, and shut up!

FWIW, this has happened to me several times with them as well.

No -- every other time I've ever seen them get a. nigripes in stock, it's been labelled as on their restricted species list. I even tried ordering a pair from them a year and a half ago; both arrived DOA. I didn't enjoy it, and I didn't enjoy eating the order (they were the only things I ordered), but I knew it was entirely possible. A. nigripes is a lousy shipper, unfortunately.

(as a side note, FFX is literally less then five minutes from me. If they allowed customers to make pick ups, I'd give them substantially more business and, undoubtedly, not have had a pair of dead a. nigripes on my hands)

FFX has screwed up my orders on several occasions, but I've always had good encounters with their customer service. I've never dealt with Don directly, but everyone else I've spoken to has been very reasonable -- even when I've been howling mad.

Like xenia, a. nigripes is reasonably hardy once established, but ships extraordinarily badly. Unlike xenia, this is not a species where captive bred is yet available. Which is a damn shame. For my money, it's by far and away the nicest species of clown.

Care is not hard(although harder then most clownfish species), they just don't ship well.

I must be lucky! I just ordered some seahorses from them yesterday and got it today. All alive!
The only compaint I have is out of the 16 seahorses I got, only 3 are male??
icon_mad.gif
Now, doesn't it make sense if someone order 4 each of 4 species, you should include 2 pairs of each species? Or do they not able to tell which is male and which is female!

I personally have not ordered much livestock from them. This is the second time. I complained, but haven't heard back from them. Mostly, if I am ordering livestock, I usually order from Marine Center, Inlandreef, Inland Aquatics, Ocean Rider, and Petwarehouse (before they change).

Their dry good section is fine, though.

Nah. Generally their livestock is very healthy and comes through shipping without a hitch. Out of maybe a dozen orders, I think I've had a total of three DOAs. My problems with them have stemmed more from the human error department (incorrect billing, shipping wrong items, last minute notification that items I was told were in stock were not, in fact, in stock) then from any problems with their livestock.

The one time I ordered from them I got everything just as expected (Emperor Juvie, Yellow Box Fish, Heni Butterfly, Blue Tang) and they forgot to add the shipping charge to my order, just the cost of the box and a heat pad.

The fish are still alive and flipping almost 2 years later.

Hi:
I've had experiences similar to CJD.
I've ordered from FFExpess a number of times and have recieved almost what i've ordered every time. The fish have all come in in good shape, and the packaging has been top notch.

Problem is that human error has popped up once in each order.

I've ordered strictly off the collectors corner, and everytime recieved the same phone call everyone has mentioned "sorry were out of stock on this rare item", but w/in 2 to 3 weeks they call and say we have the item in do you still want it. So the human errors have worked 3 against me and one for me. I ordered a "rare yellow morph dwarf fuzzy lion" which was posted, i recieved a regular colored green grey one. I sent them an image and they credited me the cost. Recently I order some seagoblins from them 2-popeyed, and they sent both short and popeyed. Totally cool fish.

So I haven't felt slighted from them, the fish have always been good, and I don't think they haven't tried to "bait N switch" on purpose, but they need to have better quality control.
my experiences

I have to say that I always received what I ordered and they were in good shape when they got to me. I live in L.A. and have been very frustrated that they won't let you pick up your shipment. I have been by the location many times but never have gone in. Has anyone seen the inside?

Hate to say this, but it sounds to me that you have not taken a look at their pictures on their Collectors Corner, or paid attention to their policies. Looking at their picture that they had on the Ricordea, and there they were plain as day as a reddish orange color. The Nigripes, if a place knows what they are doing, would NEVER gaurantee them. Just sounds to me, like your pissed that you expected something, and you did not get it, so your blaming them, instead of making double sure of the policies that they have.Have met Don, on a number of occasions, when he came in to my work, and you would have to do a lot to anger him. Not saying there could have been something else, but he is known to be genuinely nice, and more thanwilling to help someone out.

I have always liked the Nigripes clowns but I am waiting until they are available captive breed. Is anyone working on breeding them?

I like FFexpress a lot because of their customer service. You really can't expect that anyone in this business will always take your order flawlessly, but you can always make up for it. I have ordered all my livestock from ffexpress, and I have no complaints.

Here's an experience. When I ordered my 90 pounds of namoli live rock from them, I recieved two boxes of rock which had "35 lbs" written on the tape of each of them. Of course, I was mad, thinking i'd lost 20 lbs, so I called them up. The girl who answered asked me if I'd weighed them to see if I'd really only received 70 lbs, but i didn't have a scale, and I told her that, instead of lying and saying that I knew it was only 70 lbs. Well, she wasn't stingy. 20 lbs was sent to me overnight, no questions asked. I guess it isn't really extraordinary for someone to correct an order

but the great thing about the company is that they are a big business. The people who help out the customers really don't give a damn about how much money they save from doing this or that. If you get angry about something, they will do what it takes to make you happy. Unlike other places(cough...cough!.aquacon..COUGH!),where I've heard they'll be arguing down to the last cent. Hehe

I do expect it. Especially from a company that sells livestock.

My experience w/ FFE has been much more good than bad, but I have had an issue w/ less than knowledgeable sales people at times.

I bought a MH 400 watt light from them about 6 months ago. It arrived and I promtly broke it trying to screw it into the socket. I called them withing minutes thinking that I would be out another $150 for a new light. The lady listened to my story and without so much as one question sent me a new light on overnight delivery to boot. They didn't even make me send back the old light. I thought it was pretty nice of them considering it was my fault the light broke. Anyway maybe their live fish section of business is different. They do tend to have quite a few species on that restricted list by the way.

I've received some really pathetic specimens from them over the years, while also receiving some great ones. I think one of the big problems is that they deal with large volumes and don't bother to look at what they're sending. The bad fish I've received have been really bad, and I'm not talking dead from shipping. I've received anthias that were half dead (not almost there, but alive on the front half and covered in fungus on the back half), imperators with incredibly sunken features that and lateral line disease, and a number of other pathetic fish. For the most part, though, they are pretty good (although most specials are usually pretty small specimens). I think when they were a smaller startup company, they had much better fish, now that they're corporate, I don't like their stuff as much, but sometimes it's worth a try.
