the main reason why people in this end of te industry stay quiet, is due to the fact that no matter what the advice, we are asked to prove our position, let the people know which publication they can find this information, and of course what right do we have to say anything at all.

I am a little confused about this statement, when you say advice, exactly what are you referring to? The reason I ask this question is that any advice given on the boards that is some what controversial is questioned. I am not in the industry, and yet if I post that tangs need no vegetable matter in their diets I expect to be asked to prove my position.

Unfortunately, a lot of these LFS's have no idea on the advanced areas, and so will be more than willing to sell you whatever you want, and then take your money. Honestly, how many of you have a Quarantine tank, set up ?

Ok, here I go. The LFS that set me up (and I mean that both literally and figuratively) told me the following:

1: There is no need to set up a quarantine tank. It is a waste of time and money, and will not help the fish in any way. Definetly false, and I knew that before I had bought any books etc., common sense and the low cost of a qtank told me that.

2: A DSB or Plenum setup as a method of NNR will not work, and will cause the eventual crash of your tank. Not True. If you want Nitrate reduction, you must buy this reactor ($$$$) and monitor it closely to ensure hydrogen sulfide is not emmitted (that very last part is actually true).

3: PC lighting will never be enough to keep any coral alive (including mushroom anemones). You must buy this MH system ($$$$$$$$$$$$) in order to have a good survival rate. Not true.

4: Regal Angels are easy to keep (this was not to me, witnessed this occuring to a son/dad combo, the kid was around 10 yrs old). Obviously false.

5: We keep our fish in tanks with copper in them, to prevent disease outbreaks. This on has much debate about, as copper Rx over time diminishes a fishes ability to fight disease-it weakens the immune system. Now, to treat ich on a new fish, that catches it in a q-tank, obviously this short-term Rx is good, but continual long term copper exposure has bad effects.

6: You need to use a sump with bioballs. Not true, in fact increases nitrate levels. Granted, having a sump is a good idea, but bio-balls in a reef tank is not recommended.

7: A reef tank could never handle more than 2 fish (75Gallon setup). Obviously not true, just need to add slowly, and watch out for any chance of overstocking.

8: Last one as fingers are tired! Sharks are great pets. I don't need to point out the issues brought up about cramming a nurse shark in a 125 gallon tank.

I found out in this and reefc forum that many other reefkeepers are boycotting this LFS as they are in complete disgust with this sort of mis-information going on. If you try to tell them that some newer ideas have been out for a while, that work, and don't need a ton of costly equipment, they basically show you the exit sign. I am all for an LFS or MO service defending their business practices, when those practices are based on sound and correct current information. If they're unsure about a method, do to lack of knowledge about it, then they owe it to their customers to state they have little or no experience with that, instead of shooting it down as a new and unreliable method.

Industry people:

I know exactly how you feel. In my product segment, we have customers of all kinds, some with real problems and some are taking advantage of us by pretending they have problems with our product. Whether truthful or not, we have to deal with them. We have to stand in the public and steer him (and the by-standers) onto the right direction. I am glad Jim finally comes forward to clarify on behalf of FFE. This is the right direction.

WOW!!! Long thread... okay maybe not that long.

It was great to see someone from FFE finally got on the board to reply to the thread, rather than letting it go and having things heat up.

I have been in this hobby since '86 and back then the only internet we had was ftp and getting text documents to read. Now with the advent of the internet, mail order purchasing has increased atleast 1000%. I remember doing my first mail order through an aquarium magazine. Only being able to read the text and calling up some guy and having it deliver to my house. And now, pictures to show what you MAY received.

I have to say that I have ordered from FFE, Jeff's, Marine Depot and a few others. My experience has always been great. Even though the live stocks sometimes come DOA or even a few days later, a phone call to either or them will result in a credit in most cases. The most important aspect of mail order is how a business takes care of complaints and try to resolved them. I had a whole shipment of livestock that I order last summer arrived without a cool pack and all died within a week. Although I wasn't able to get full refund for all the DOA, I did get partial credit. I wasn't happy, but I still order from the MO because of their customer service. So, the morale of the story is, customers are willing to go back if the service is great. Even a pissed off customer will return if properly taken care of.

I have stopped ordering livestock MO because I can get a similar deal (after shipping) from my LFS and it's also important for me to support my LFS if I want a place to hang out on the weekend.

FFE you guys rule. Keep up the good work.

Hey wait... what's up with the shipping charge hike???
