I've got a (new) VHO tar ballast running 2 24" VHOs, I read these things burn warmer than electric ballasts do, but this thing is HOT and so are the bulbs. What is an ideal surface to put this on? any ideas?

Anyone? I have it sitting on a small block of 2x4 with a fan blowing on it, this is working okay, but looking for other options. Ideas?

All eltro-magnetic ballasts get hot. Some electronic ballasts don't.

You really need to mount that ballast more safely. A metal box, properly earthed, would be suitable.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm a little unsure how to do this. How do I properly "earth" the metal box? I need some advice.

Weld a heatsink on to the casing. Use 1" platic spacers and get long screws to mount it to you're cabinet/whatever. Or look in to an alternative www.lampsnow.com HTH

If I understand it correctly, you plug should have 3 prongs, a Hot, Neutral and a Ground. Your house will have the ground connected directly to a metal rod that is hammered into dirt.

If you product has a UL approval you should not have to worry about it.

PS – make sure you still connect the ballast to a GFI.

Regarding the heat I’m not sure about that.

Matt23, I don't know how hot yours is, but I am running 4 96w PC in my sump and the 2 ballast is not "that" hot. The bulb is, but the ballast is OK to touch, as long as i don't stick my big face right on it! I am placing mine on the carpetted floor, the unit is grounded, of course.

You can always mount the VHO to a wooden cabinet. I don't seriously think you will have a problem of scorching the wood.
