John, this forum is really for finished tank specs. Since you're looking for comments on your system, I'm moving your post to the general discussion forum.
It has been my experience that a mandarin needs a large tank, matured, with a lot of pod life in the tank. The scooter I think goes after the same pods so that would make it even worse in your smaller tank. Occasionally, a mandarin has been converted to fed foods but usually they will die before they eat anything significant that you can feed them.
I can attest to the Scooter Blenny's reluctance to eat. I wouldn't put a SB in with a Mandarin in a 46 gal. tank. They would compete for food and one or both will most likely lose. Those I've corresponded with who have been successful keeping Mandarins and/or Scooters have grown their own copepods, amphipods as a constant food supply - or at least had access to obtain them easily.
IMO the two are compatable but I have to agree that it would take alot of pods to keep them going. Doubt it would be a good combo in that small of a set-up. I have had luck getting my scooters to eat frozen food. I had heard it was tough to do but mine took right too it. I just fed heavy to make sure there was enough to get to them. Now I can feed them right out of the turkey baster. I have some cool pics to post of this when I get home. (I am working now, sorta)
Harrison, i've got a scooter blennie in my 75. He's got enough pods to make him a fat little fella. But would you let us know what kind of frozen food you've had success with feeding to your scooters?
Hi John! I am afraid that your madarin and scotter blenny will both starve to death in time because of lack of pods, etc to keep them alive in a small tank.
You need to have a refugium to supply the bugs they need or a large tank of at least 100 gallons or more with at least 100lbs of LR so they will have an adequate supply of food.
Do the Mandarin and Scooter Blemny a favor as well as yourself and return them to the LFS and may be when you set up a refugium or get a larger tank you can again try to maintain of of these beautiful fishes. IMO Johnny
