I am just going to get in to keeping corals and was thinking of getting or making a calcium reactor. I live in northern Canada and shipping aragonite up here is very expensive. I was woundering if anyone has ever use crushed oyster shells. They are really cheap here like 15 bucks for 50lbs and they are calcium just wondering if anyone with a reactor has tried this or do you think it would work?

I would definitely give it a try. I would also use a PH monitor in the chamber to keep track of the reactor status, and perform water tests on the effluent.

I had talked with someone who tried the oyster shells. He said it made the PO4 spike and had a nasty algae bloom. crushed coral will work very well and is pretty cheap too....
