I did not really switch from one tank to another. I bought some really cured live rock, some live sand and some aragonite sand and we did a water change from our 46g tank and took that water to begin the 20g tank. So all in all there was about 12 gallon from the cycled tank and the rest from newly mixed water. I was ready to wait for a cycle, even though the rocks were cured. But I had a problem with a fish in our 46g that we had to put in the 20g to save his life.He was there for about a month before we returned him to the LFS. The tank took it well without any amonia spike.. in fact there was never any amonia or nitrite showing on the test ever. I finally made a water change after 3 weeks because the nitrates were around 20.. two water changes later they were down to zero and stayed that way since then. That is why I know it never went through cycling.
As for live rock I bought them at a LFS (around 38 pounds) not online so the trip back home did not seem to be long enough to kill anything in the rocks.
