Hey,

I was looking into getting a clam soon and have heard that small ones (under 2 inches) do not do terrible well, and die for unexplained reasons. Can anyone tell me what is a good size to get? to maximize success? thanks.

If you're getting a t. maxima, 3" clams are very hardy and still relatively small. Baby maxima's don't seem do do very well like you said but i have had good results with very small squamosas. If you're looking for growth get a 2-3" derasa, if you keep your CA up the thing will grow like a weed. HTH

One thing that might be worth mentioning: Tridacna clams tend to ship better if you buy them at a relatively small size. 1-3 inches from what I've gathered is the best size for shipping. I think TRA vol.1 goes into detail on this.

Just wanted to make sure you have MH lights. I think most on board will agree that T. Max needs MH lights. T. Squomosa should survive under PC or VHO but growth will be slower than under MH.

Also feed DT's or similar stuff.

I have seen people with sucess with 1-3", but 3" or larger is definetly much much much much hardier. If you can afford it, get the even larger size, 6"+.

Pretty much and answer boils down to "how much $$ and space do you have?"
