One is 2 to 4 inches deep and the other is 5 to 6 inches.
If I DO vaccuum, it's only because I have developed cyanobacter or other scourge and only to remove the scourge. Otherwise I let the spaghetti and bristleworms, snails and hermits clean it!

I have shallow sand beds, 1" or less. I do vacuum during weekly water changes.

FWIW, my sand is FULL of spaghetti worms and amphipods. I have a refugium that I do not disturb with a vacuum.'

When I do vacuum, I usually let the waste water stand a while before discarding, but I've not noticed any worms etc. being lost due to this.

I've also re-used the waste water to hatch brine, etc.

Only 2"
Half aragonite, Half Fiji Live Sand
Never Vaccuumed.
Cuc's, crabs, + worms keep it clean. some sand is pink w/coralline.

Ideas for next survey: How many different ways have we spelled vaccuummed?

My sand bed varies from 2inches to 5inches. There are hills and valleys throughout the tank. I never vacuum the sand, but I will pull any algae/cyano off by hand. I use HD southdown sand.

Main tank = ~1" CC, LS and sugar sized aragonite, couldn't siphon it if I tried.

Sump = 4" southdown, siphon just the cyano, let the stars, worms and snails do the rest.
