84 degrees isn't to bad, I just wouldn't let it get any higher if possible. Not suprised your tank is that hot considering you have 1000w of light over your tank. Could have gone with 250's and would have been fine. If you have a sump you can try freezing some RO water or take the plunge and dish out some serious cash for a chiller. I'm guessing you got the 400's just because you may move up to a bigger tank. Might wanna go the extra step and get the chiller.

i have run my tank at a constant 83F for a few years now and everything is thriving. of course i only have 425W of metal halide above my 58. 84 is just fine but i would not go much higher. it is not uncommon for reefs to get up to 87 and possibly higher but it is a slow increase and also for short periods of time thus minimizing the amount of stress.

I agree dual 400W Iwasakis put out a great deal of heat-much more so than 250W. With the latest heat,I can barely keep my systems at 82F with a chiller(basement temp with lights on 96F).Try not to let temp get above 86F. Consider chiller but for now ice in sump, fans(?AC)and lights on at night should help.

i noticed that if my temp gets above around 85-86, i see slime on the surface of the water. Well, i saw this today, so my lights are off for today. 84 and below everything is in great shape.

I think I am going to use the old lighting till I get the 180G tank.

I considered getting 250s, but everything I read said that those people who get 250s end up upgrading. The halides don't fit well over the 55gal anyway. Sure is bright, though!

When I get the 180 I will use fans over the water to spur evaporation.

Thanks,
Ernie

Also, would a glass or acrylic shield lower the temp in the tank? Most the heat seems to be between the lamps and water. The ambient temp was raised some, but not much.

I just got my two 400W 6500K Iwasakis up and running w/ 2X96W PC true actinics and my water temp is up to 84 F. Is that too hot? I already have two fans in the hood going and my cieling fan in the room cranked. The lights are about 18" off the water now.

This is for my 55G. BTW one of the 96W PC lights doesn't work.

Thanks in advance,

E

On my 180, I have 3 x 400 and 2 60"140watt VHO and my temp runs 81-84. I have noticed that my softies do well but arco I seem to have trouble with.
