Thanks for the replies, Cheese that was exactly what i was looking for! Any other suggestions? Sprung says that a NO flourescent will do the trick but you should have at least 2 so i do believe that the compacts will cut the mustard. Anyone disagree?

How much light? Now deep sand? Good reference books? Any info? I think Sprung has a book out on them somewhere...

This is my idea but it might be like how people want to put acropora under an incandescent so bear w/ me. I ordered a CPR refugium, so i figure if i put a good 3" of sand in it or however much it can handle and stick a mangrove in it it would work. Ah, lighting. I have a Coralife mini-might which is 2x9w pc's in a neat little hood thingy. Now if i suspend this over the refugium, is this tree going to die of light deficiancy? At inland they had 2 or 3 28w pc's lighting their mangroves so they can't need a ton of light but i assume the more the merrier.

Should i scrap my idea and just do calurpa or should i try it, i assume i can get ahold of a small mangrove. TIA, and feel free to refine my idea!

I felt silly leaving that inadequate response when so many others did so much better... so I deleted it!

I grow my mangroves outside in full light(thats what they live in,in the wild), and they do fine. I have a friend who has some growing under(and over) NOs and VHOs. If you can grow just about any other plant under NO lights(plant grow type)you should be able to grow them with 18 watts of NO, but that would be very minimal. They probably would do much better with as much light as possible. I dont know if that answered your question or not, but I think they will live but not thrive under 18 watts of NO or any other 18 watt fixture. My sister has grown mangroves on her kithen window in a bottle for a year or more with just ambiant light and they do good(one year is how big they get till you have to take them outside). The minimum light I have ever used is 80 watts NO but that was for terrerium plants and they thrived. My calurpa tanks have 160 NO with outside light for sometime during the day and do fine. They also live right out in the open in shallow water in the wild. On pilings calurpa lives right at the surface. But some people get it to live with minimal light. Steve .

You guys really think Mangrooves work?

I've tried them once before and got minimul results...

Mangroves are easy to keep in sumps. They grow well on styro floats and are very easy to provide lighting for. They are not the total answer but when combined with seaweeds, squirts/sponges, Tridacnas, and Xenids your system should have no measurable NO4/PO4. HTH

They're not so hot for filtration - they're mainly for aesthetics & diversity (although they may help in aerating a DSB...).

I bought 2 mangroves from www.floridaplants.com , was just under $12 including shipping.

The problem I have with them is their height. I have one but it grew into the light I keep over my refugium which is 12" above the water surface. If I was going to keep both caulerpa and mangroves I would have to have 2 different light sources, I don't think there is enough benefit to them to install a second light source.

I read the pamphlet by Sprung that Cheese Sandwhich found and now i'm a expert

One or two mangroves won't make much of a difference but i guess if you have a smaller tank (ie around a 30 or less, but maybe more) then 1 mangrove per gallon in a refugium will do the trick but the refugium would probably be larger than the display...

They can be pruned by cutting off some new growth but apparently you cant cut too much off small ones.

SPC, i thought about that but i think i'll get a second light source and use the 9w pc's for the calurpa. I can see how that would be a problem as it grows.

Checked out Champion, what about a power quad? its a 27w pc lamp that i could hang over it. Anyone ever see a 70w halide pendant light smaller than standard pendants? I can't fit another large bell pendant but the power quad and the mini-might would fit nicely! Any other thoughts? Thanks for all the replies!

If you guys are looking for a cheap source for mangrove...you can't beat the deal on eBay. I got 10 for $10 from this guy that's based in Hawaii. Just do a search on eBay on Mangrove. I think he is still the only one that sell them. He told me they were grown in saltwater, so there is no need for acclimation. I bought 10 about 6 months+ ago. I still have 9 left. They are about 6-8" in length, and barely have any roots coming out. Now, they all have an extensive root system. One thing I've notice is that mangroves love light, but cannot be hot. If they are too close to the light source, the leaves will burn-out and wilt. I have kept my mangroves under 150w of Home Depot plant bulb, about 1' away on the side (not directly underneath the light source). Whether they work or not....well... for $15 (including shipping) I guess I can't go wrong either way! They HAVE to take up "some" nutrient at least.

I have a better idea, what about a 96w quad lamp (18"x6"x2")? Hmmm...... The mangrove saga continues...

This way i could put mangroves throughout the whole refugium, instead of the 1 or 2 i was planning. But i want to keep macro algae too so i may just do half the refugium w/ a 27w quad and the other half w/ my mini might.
