Don't get me wrong, they'll probably work for a very small, lightly loaded tank, but there's a reason that you can buy them brand new for less than $40.
I had one on a 20g tank. I could never get it to stop spewing micro bubbles into the tank. Threw it in the junk, spent 120 and purchased a CPR Bak Pak.

Yeah, a $500 skimmer isn't going to be sold for $25.
I guess my question is; are they hard to use?
PS I appreciate the help. Sorry if I sounded defensive - I know the best way to go is to get the good equipment up front. But this hobby is bleeding me dry; I'm now learning to settle for workable + temporary solutions that I can improve on over time. I just can't have everything I want right now. Which sucks.

Unless the technology has improved dramatically stay away from it. I had one years ago on a 55gal. The darn thing ony had two settings; 1) fill the cup with water and overflow, and 2) produce nothing. I worked with it for a couple of months (I was broke too) before I gave up. I bought a skimmer with an airstone and a good air pump until I could aford a Bakpak. The airstone and pump worked really well as long as the tank wasn't stocked too much.
Hi. You don't have to pay $250 for an inexpensive, easy to use and effective skimmer. Look into the Prizm skimmer. You can get one for about $80 and it works. I have been using one on my 45 gallon FO tank for over a year and have very few complaints except that it is fairly noisy.
I found it to work great after I modified it. It was on a 29 prop tank and produced a very nice dry sludge.
ell I just tried copy and paste the diagram of my modifications here, but it didn't work, so if interested e-mail me and I can send it off.
I picked up one for about $20 and the bubbles kept getting in the tank. I had a spare air pump and air line around so I plugged the air imput on the power head and used an air stone. I have a valve to control how much air I put in and can control how much water goes in by the power head. It works pretty well. What can I say for $20. I do have to adjust it often to keep the water from filling up the cup or not producing the foam. After water changes I have to turn it down to get it to work right and have to turn it up every couple days until the next water change. It was worth my money but will be buying a better ckimmer in the future.
