When my dog gets fleas, I feed him an ich infested blue tang that has just ingested garlic. This works very well to treat ich on the dog, but it seems that the fleas still remain.

Actually I have had success with garlic on me purple tang and my blue (hippo) tang.

5-nitroimiazole is useless in my experience, and DEFINITLEY affects the tank in some negative ways. I learned the hard way about that stuff...

Terry B.,

With regards to Stress Coat, do you know if this would hurt inverts at all ?

I've had to tear out the substrate in a FOWLR over the last while, due to a tunnel digging trigger, the tank has not had ick, so there is no real evidence of that, but the fish look really rough, like they need some slime...

However, there are a few corals in there on the rock.

One thing to be aware of with any stress coat product is protein skimmer overflow. Any decent skimmer will go crazy when you add this to your tank.

Plus, it tends to decrease the water suface tension, so bubbles don't pop as easily - similar to adding a little detergent to the water. Can you say "Toooooo much foam!"

Terry I value your posts relative to bacterial problems and solutions to those problems.
Would you be willing to try out the garlic extract procedure on ich infected fish to determine its usefulness or not?
Thank you

Just a quick anectdote:

When I used to be huge in to camping, I would take tons of garlic as "mosquito repllants". I noticed that the two of us who regularly took it would hardly ever get bitten by mosquitoes, but the others with us would. Next time I'm outside in the summer, I'll load up on it and see if it was as effective as I remember.

In the freshwater discus relm, quite often garlic is added to a beefheart food mix. It is mainly used to controll internal parasites, tapeworm, heximita etc. It works better at the begining of an infestation rather than an advance case.

I don't have the articals at hand (I am at work now so you can look it up if you have the time), but garlic has 2 chemicals that are usefull in treating parasitic diseases. The importance of useing fresh garlic can not be overstated because it oxidizes really quicly.

Is it a sure fired cure all..I don't think so. But it has its merrits and can be usefull in a reef tank where your choice of medication is very limited. Just my 2 cents...
