Scarlet Hermit Crab Mating ?

Can someone please describe scarlet hermit crab mating habits and whether they breed in captivity.

Here's what I saw............

One Large scarlet and one smaller scarlet hermit crab shells aligned. The Larger Crab reached into the smaller ones shell and pulled him/her out( I thought he/she was about to eat the other).

Once the larger one had the smaller one almost all the way outta the shell he/she came out of his/her shell and they wrapped all their legs around each others bodies.

What happened next could only be described as well...um.....humping

they did this several times over the course of an hour and have been sitting there facing each other for almost 3 hours

Perhaps the male is spent and she's waiting for him to recharge his batteries

anyone seen this before ?

I see this all the time in my tank, but usually, someone ends up dead or in a much less desireable shell....

well whatever the little one is doing she must be good at it because.........

Another large scarlet came over chased the first one away and started doing it too

Hermit crab reproduction is something i tried to find out about before and for my efforts i uncovered NOTHING.

Your expirience sounds pretty good though Rich. Think its time for the pitter patter of tiny claws. But IMO if you can find enough teeny tiny shells for the babys then you would officially win obscure shopper of the year award.
