Is there anything to prevent them from leaking?

The only place that they might leak is around the threaded fittings which are a little sloppy. If you wrap plenty of teflon tape you should be ok. I ran a 9.5 for a while externally and didn't have any problems. They are not as quiet as some other pumps but not bad.

I run a Mag 24 as my return pump and it is plumbed externally. I have no leaking problems.

Can they run externaly?
