Live sand from ocean?

Has anyone ever scooped live sand out of the ocean and used it in their tank?

I'll be visiting the gulf of mexico next week, and could easily bring some sand back to seed a sand bed....

Depends where you live I think.

Off the gulf coast, you are allowed to take a one gallon bucket of sand per day per person. It is very important that you take sand from areas that are NOT near inlets, drainpipes, near boat docks, etc....anything that might pollute it. Make sure that some water is in the bucket to keep the sand alive. If you notice any scum or oily film on the water, do not use the sand!!

I took 3 instant ocean buckets of sand from the florida keys this summer. I took sand that was adjacent to a reef and I was 3 miles out.
