To all reefers,

Can any body point me to the source for getting frag or small colony (if the price will not cost me an arm and a leg) of a REAL blue acropora? When I say blue, I mean it's the true blue color, not like lavender or purple-like-blue. I had seen some pictures of people's tank that had some really blue acropora that look like the blue color of a maxima clam. I don't know if because of the lighting variation from the picture or the color showed up in the pictures is the actual color. Unfortunately, I can't remember the urls for those web sites again to ask for information. Are there acropora that have true blue color or just blue like color only? Thanks for any info.

Remember that most corals will shift in color under different conditions.

What may be a true blue in someones tank may turn green in yours.

To keep the color shifts to a minimum, try to by a frag off another hobbyist who has identical lighting, water flow etc as your tank.

Hell, I have a purple millepora and fragged a piece and mounted it 6" away from the mother colony 2 months ago. Today the frag is a bright turqiouse blue. strange!!!

For a source on anything rare in terms of acroporas, your best bet is always Steve Tyree (www.dynamicecomorphology.com and www.reeffarmers.com)

As far as blue acroporas, they're out there but you're not going to find one at the local petshop. I think Joe Kelley has some of his blue tortuosa ready to go, might try him too (see http://www.blueoceandesigns.com/images/index.htm). The pic Joe has up doesn't do it justice, assuming his came from the same place mine did. I lost mine this past summer, unfortunately, but here's a pic of mine:

...and a pic of Joe's:

Was that the one you got from me? If so, yeah, it has a tendency to blue under some conditions. Fairly unpredictable, but it's happened in a few tanks now.

I gotta agree with what everyone's saying here. These acropora will color up to whatever the aquarium conditions dictate. I too have fragged a piece off one of my colonies only to place it in my other system and it colors up completely differently. I will say that blue seems to be the color of choice in my 180. I have several real blue staghorns, acropora millepora, acropora tortuosa{a couple of sources} and they have been fairly easy to keep blue. I think it has a lot to do with lighting, I have 3 250w iwasaki's over the 180, and water chemistry. I would try to find someone that has comparible lighting to yours and try a frag of whatever blue spp. you can and see what happens. HTH..
