The reason those Astrea's are so slow is because you only have 2 of them in a 55. A general rule of thumb for them is approximately 1 per gallon. I would have at least 40 in there.

However Tiger Trochus seem to have the greatest reputation for speed and eating ability.

In all reality you just don't have a large enough population.

what are the best snails for cleaning brown algae off the glass. also i dont really like astrea becuase they are so slow. other than that i have a lot of brown algae on the glass of my 55 what snails and crabs do you recomend and how many. right now i have have 2 astrea, 1 unknow with a shell, and i have 10 or so that came with my LR but don't have shells. I have 5 blue leg hermits also. thanks for any help!!!

A scraper or sponge would work better. Increase your flow across the glass and check your water quality. It should be only temporary anyway.

Trochus shells come almost to a point and seem to be a lighter color. I use Trochus and Cereth snails on the glass and rocks. I like Queen Conches for the sand. I don't have any Astreas because they have a tendency to fall on their backs and have a hard time righting themselves. I also don't like Turbos because they are large and tend to bulldoze things.

I would try to avoid hermits as they are very opportunistic.

I have over 100 snails in my 180, BTW. They keep the green stuff to a minimum.
