Less than a year ago,I bought a 55 gallon tank. I bought 50 lbs. of premium liverock and set up a DSB. I didn't know anything when I started and was not very smart with some of my livestock purchases. After a couple months I bought a bubble tip anemone and a colt coral. The anemone was the size of a half dollar, colt was small too. I got on these boards and I have tried to learn as much as I can to keep the anemone alive. Well its alive and growing out of control along with the colt and the other corals. I knew they would grow but its nuts. Bought 1 stalk of xenia now its spread over entire rock with at least 10 stalks. I want to upgrade to a 75 for its width. Im real worried this will be to small in a few months. Point is buy tiny frags because some corals and animals grow like weeds.
Don't buy a 55 tank....unless

Yeah no kidding! When I started the whole reef thing, I was looking at 20 gallon tanks. I ended up with a 100 thinking it was extremely large. Now I have come to the realization that my 100 isn't big enough, for fish alone.
In fact, I was looking at a 180 today at the pet store. I was asking myself, "Will this be large enough for my next tank?"

hectina, I set up a 180 about three months ago and for the first couple of months I thought wow what a big tank. However, now I look at it and think about what a 300 would be like, I don't know if it ever ends but hopefully I will live long enough to find out.

I was inspired to get a bubble-tip anemone due to 2 lfs the have had 1 for 10 years and the other has had his for 13 years. Mine is 8 months old now. 55 gallon reef 50 lbs of liverock. 1 piece has a huge hole and thats where the anemone put his foot down. He has never moved just grown. Filtration is a pm hot skimmer, a dsb,liverock, and a cheap power filter. Plenty of current with 4 large powerheads. I feed him large pieces of shrimp 2 days a week. I now fear that a 75 gallon won't house him he is just getting huge. All yea the lighting is 260 watts of white and actinic pc,
also a 40 watt blue for 300 watts. 55 gallon is around 6 watts a gallon. I change 3 gallons a month for wc. I add Kent A & B for calcium. Occasionaly I add kent buffer to keep alk high.

Just do what I do, hack, chop, trade, sell or flush.
I'm resisting the urge to upgrade my 38 gal, because I know WC/topoff will be overwhelming. I've easily made over $200 in store credit since winter with xenia, now to move onto green star polyps and mushrooms
