Is there such a thing as a red colt coral? It's really not red but more of an orange color. It was sold to me as a red colt coral, I hope it's not one of those corals you have to feed that has no algae to make it's own food. How can I tell the difference or what might give it away as a coral that has to be feed? thanks

Unfortunately, what might give it away as a ahermatypic/non-photosynthetic algae hosting coral will be the fact that it'll probably perish

.
The requirements for Dendronethya sp. are much greater than your standard Alcyonium (Colt). Check links on the Dendro. sp. coral and you should definitely be able to tell by their appearence if that is what you have or it's merely a dyed colt.

ive had an "orange colt" for just over 10 months, at first i thought it was a colt with different coloration. ive since found out that it is not a colt at all, it is a dendro. what ive done after cutting several frags from the poor critter is tuck it into the back of the tank, where it gets plenty of indirect current. i do heavily feed my tank, phyto, micro-vert, and frozen. once i started leaving it ALONE its growing if not thriving. if you want to see pics of them theyre on my page which is listed under my profile. pretty cool pics if i do say so
