Hi,

if you go to http://www.ultimatereef.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard/topic.cgi?forum=1&topic=1804, you can see my current tank specs. I'm thinking of getting a skimmer because for some reason, I can't get rid of the hair algae in my tank....it's probably phosphates, but as I don't have a test kit for this, I'm not 100% on that. As detailed in the post, I'm planning to upgrade the tank. Can anyone recommend a skimmer that would be able to cope with the full setup. I don't plan to have a heavy bio-load.

There are lots of different kinds of skimmers out there, many of them very good. Different people will tell you different things about a particular manufacturer as well.
What you really want to decide is what kind of skimmer you want. There are a couple of different mechanisms by which they work. Venturi driven skimmers even come in a couple of different flavors (as do air-driven). Admittedly the newer, hi-tech skimmers seem to produce greater quantity of foam, but that doesn't mean the older, tried and true skimmers aren't any good. If you're looking to do this on the Cheap, you could try making a DIY model, there are many plans on the internet.
That all being said, if you're just looking for people to tell you which brand they like... go with a Lifereef. I like the way he does his venturi's to keep them clean.

The Turboflotor Shorty Compact has beed developed from the successful Turboflotor 5.000 Shorty series. By changing the location of the connections, the space requirement of the skimmer is reduced and the installation into the cabinet is easier . Due to an optimum relation between height and the construction of the air injection nozzle, the air intake reaches approx. 600 l/h air /h. Like the larger models, they are supplied with a venturi pump and our patented needle wheel.
total height: 62 cm
venturi pump: ocean runner 3500 with needle wheel
capacity: up to 1500 l
space requirement: 35 x 35 cm
air intake: 600l/h

As soon as i get £400 anyhow

FWIW the Turboflotor 1000 was nothing but problems for me. I love my MyReefCreations Skimmer. Andy does top-notch work, and is very customer service oriented.

I also tried a TF1000 on my 180. It was WAY insufficient. I sold it to someone with a 55 and got an Evo 750. Basically tried to save a few $$$ with the TF and ended up buying two skimmers instead. FWIW

my TF sucks. it's only pulling about a couple teaspoons of gunk out of my 55 gallon tank. granted my stock is fairly small (two clowns and a mandarine gobie) i still expected the TF to pull out more junk. maybe my live rocks are just doing such a great job =P oh yeah i have about 120 lbs of live rock. haha.

I have a Euroreef CS6-1 for my 75G FO tank. It is solid. Check them out at Euro-Reef

Also, I called them to ask a few questions and they were EXTREMELY helpful. If you want an IN-SUMP skimmer, I recommend giving this one a look. Picked mine up from premiumaquatics.com if you were wondering where they are sold. Of course, this is IMHO.

Good Luck!!
