I have desided to try Kick-Ich by ruby reef to try and cure a fish of his ich. The local fish stores vary in their opinion from this product doesnt work to this will work fine if the case isnt to bad..Has anyone had any experiences with this product they can share.

If you do a search on Kick ich you will find many discussions.

The skinny is most think it does nothing, some think it does something.

I tend to think instafixes don't work.

I tried it. It didn't work for me. I to had a problem with ick. All i do now is soak the food in either garlic oil..selcon or zoe. I did that and made sure my water parameters were right. You have to find out what is stressing your fish out. Solve that problem and your fish should do fine. The oil..selcon and zoe are just things that help your fish fight off the ick themselfs. Quick fixes don't work....JMO

It is 5-nitroimidazole, which is an anti-parasite drug. I have used it in conjunction with garlic-soaked flake food and it worked, eventually. Since I didn't do a controlled experiment, I can't tell you if it would have worked alone or not. But you should soak your fish's favorite food in eg Kyolic brand water soluble garlic extract. The fish seem to really like the taste too.

The most definitive treatment for ich is to lower the salinity to 1.009 for 3 weeks. If you have no invertibrates you can do this in your main system. Otherwise move the fish to do this, but make sure you have an established biological filter or you will create more problems than you solve via the stress of moving the fish.

I just wanted to post an update since i got so many negative comments on Kick-Ich. I am 4 days into the treatment and the fish that was in pretty bad shape has made a full recovery. I guess Im now a Kick-ich supporter!!!!

Are you doing anything else besides the kick ich to deal with the problem?

Please update us in four to seven more days.

I too have had great success with Kick Ich. My Regal Tang used to have ich too. I used it and it seemed to take care of the ich. Please do keep us updated.

That active ingredient has been sold under several labels for years, the first I believe was called "ecolibrium". I've never seen it work any better than a no treatment (the 50/50 righty mentioned) and have had plenty of customers complain that they bought it elsewhere after I gave them my opinion (we don't sell it) and it did not work and their fish died. I personally think the garlic oil thing is in the same boat.. anecdotal and probably more voodoo than anything. I've tried garlic oil on incoming fish and seen no difference than doing nothing... I think the incoming fish bit is a good test as these fish are usually mishandled and stressed and I have gotten some pretty messed up and diseased fish over the years at one time or another as I'm sure you can imagine. But hey, to each his own. If you want to feed your fish garlic go right ahead.. probably doesn't hurt anything other than give them bad breath.. heh. Trying to get your percs to spawn? Don't feed them garlic oil

I should also add that people often call velvet (amyloodinium) "ich" and try these products on it. The 50/50 success rate is probably fish with minor crypto problems that would have gotten better anyways.. I don't think any of these products are capable of treating velvet which is much more virulent and deadly.

Regal tang seem to get ick a lot. Espcially when you first bought it and introduce it to your tank. If your regal tang is eating fine and it has ick, the stress will be gone in a few days. All the ick will clear up. I introduce four regal tangs in my tank at different days. Every one of them has ick when I put it in my reef tank. I keep feeding it and make sure that it got all the nutrients it needs. If you think kick ick work then you should use it. But you also should think about the stress of the fish and the food that it needs for recovery. Good luck..

The reports of Kick Ich working are totally anecdotal.
Often, with good water and feeding, the ich will back off without any medication. So when a person uses kick ich and has good water and is feeding well it is not possible to tell if the kick ich had any hand in the stopping of the disease.
People often think it must have been the kick ich, however this may be a logical fallacy - post hoc, ergo propter hoc - it happened after therefore was caused by. The ich went away after I added Kick Ich, therefore the Kick Ich got rid of the ich. The same reasoning has led people to think water changes, light bulb changes, temp changes, cleaning the filter, adding of a uv sterilizer, adding Melafix and feeding garlic cure ich.
So I am glad that the ich is in remission and I hope it stays that way.

I am still unconvinced that Kick Ich was responsible. When the anecdotal reports start coming in at 80-90% in favor of Kick Ich (currently 50%, about the same if you do nothing), I will probably rethink the product.

Thanks!
