I have a 225 gal. aquarium. Before I set it on the stand should I put anything between the stand and the bottom of the tank? For stress reasons. I have a stand made of angle iron that was bought from a fish store.
I've seen it suggested, by a few different sources, that one place some kind of a seamless foam pad between the top of the stand and the tank. I'm planning on using a 1/2 inch thick sheet of styrofoam insulation between my stand and tank.
I think the most important thing is to ensure that your system is level and will stay level throughout it's life. If you're extremely confident in your floor not sagging and the stand and tank are level when you set it up, the fown may not be necessary. However, if it is not perfectly level, the foam will allow gravity to force it into level decreasing stress on the tank and possible leaks.
My LFS warned me against using an iron stand because they said it would rust. So before I put my new 75 on the iron stand, I gave the stand four coats of rustoleum then placed a piece of 1/4" plexiglass between the tank and stand. It's too soon to tell how well this will work, but it can only help.
