During the year I aquired the equipment, it was worth about 20%. Now I have the equipment I want, I think it has settled down to 1 - 2 %. (maintenance mode) Plus my income is increasing.
I currently have only a 20gal outdoor Mangrove tank, with minimal livestock & filtration. Well under 1%.
I have my sights on a nice big reef system in the next year or two, though, at which point I might just have to mortgage my soul! (That's an exageration - will probably run me in the 10% range).
maybe 25+ % being a poor college kid that set up a 55gal from scratch is a big bill w/ a little wallet. maybe not the best choice in life but heck you have to have fun and live a little. i have my whole life ahead of me yet!!
Am i the only one that thinks this is a completely DEPRESSING QUESTION????
I try to focus on all the cool things than how much it costs.. if i think about it too much i think i'd go insane.. sort of like going on a nice vacation.. just enjoy it and dont think about how much it costs

well, i think it really depends on what your salary is...
ie: someone who writes 10% might be making 4k a year, and that's $400, but someone else might be making $75K and that's $7500, so it's a pretty big range.
I see the point of where it can get depressing, but like some people said, the initial cost is what knocks your breath out, but then the maintenance evens out... or at least we'd like to think so
My reef expenses exceed my income, but I'm trying to talk my wife into giving me a bigger allowance. (I'm a stay at home dad)
Acutally, my expenses are minimal because I have all the equipment I need and I sell a lot of cuttings. But still, what I consider minimal would make a non-fish person cringe.

I agree, but the cost (especially in terms of what we can afford) is something we shouldn't be oblivious to either, lest we get ourselves into trouble & as result aren't able to afford the hobby any longer...

I am selling more and more BG Cardinals to my LFS.
Depend what you refer as "income"? Is it the official version (IRS) or the un-official?
Official version -- about 25%, Unofficial -- very low....
Hehehe........now everyone should know why my email address is not listed......hehehe....
(....for those IRS sniffers out there....this message will self destruct in 5 minutes)
Come to think of it, Why the heck should I have to worry about IRS here? The expenses are not reported anywhere on my tax forms anyway..., How the hell would they know how much I spent on fish anyway?......or do they?......
