Pressure rated pumps can handle back pressure and non-pressure rated ones are for direct flow, so which one is best suited for running a protein skimmer? I see many skimmer manufacturers that recommend non-pressure rated pumps, does it make any difference. Can anyone explain how the 2 types are different mechanically?

A protein skimmer should be one with a pump rated for pressure! They can handle the force put back on the pump a little better, and produce more GPH under the same amount of pressure than a ciculation pump would do.

Enjoy your skimming!

OK...so which pumps are pressure rated? I use a Mag 7 on my Precision Marine skimmer....seems to work fine, but I'm not sure if it's pressure rated. How do you tell??

The Mag 7 is not a pressure rated pump, take a look a championlighting web sight, they have a side by side comparison of a lot of pumps and shows which are pressure rated. This still has me confused as to which pump to get to run a skimmer.
