Bought a linckia today. It has been floating in my tank for allmost 6 hours now. I've been adding a little water every 1/2 hour. My tank salinity is just a little under 1.026 and all other water parameters are good. Question is how long should i acclimate it for. I was thinking 8 hours. Any thoughts??.........

I'd put it in now. The temp is obviously the same now and your salinity must have reached equal levels after 6 hours. Too long can be a problem too.

Only reason i waited so long is i've read that some acclimate for 24 hours.

Just want to make sure.

the only reason too long is bad is because the water he is in is not getting filter biologically and its reletively small.

Hi
What good is it acclimating them the right amount of time, when the LFS only acclimates them for 1/2 hour. The damage is probably done after they receive the star. I dont know about your LFS but mine only acclimates for 1/2 hour. When you mention that they need more time, they just give you that glazed eye look like your from outer space. I give up on blue Linckia for this reason!

It all depends on how much water you have been adding during the 6 hours of acclimation. That's why giving someone a strictly hourly estimate for acclimation just won't get the job done. What you want to do is double the amount of water in the container first slowly (50/50 your water/LFS water), then dump out half of that and 50/50 it again. Spread it out over your 6 hours and you're golden. A drip would work best and you can make/buy them cheap.

So, if you think you've pretty much got all your water in the container w/ the star then toss it in. But if you've been adding 1/8 of a teaspoon every half an hour, you've got some work to do.

If you're worried about leaving the star in the bag for too long, after a while of acclimating toss in an airstone. Unless you feed it (?!?) you won't have to worry about biological filtration in the bag for that amount of time. HTH

You do make a good point. The LFS probably don't take the time to do it right. I guess you just take your chances that it makes it. But acclimating it the right way when you get it should help some. (I HOPE) I did take out some water when i acclimated, so before i put it in my tank it was pretty much all my water....So far so good.

O.K. let me say this Blue linkas are notoriuosly hard to keep and the one linka I advised against in your last post I have kept both red and yellow linka's for several years and still am unwilling to chance a blue linka.

However, having said that, 6 hours adding a little water at a time should be sufficent to equalize temp and specific gravity in your tank.

I would advise feeding yor tank some algea based foods such as pygmy angel formula, and never cleaning the back glass to insure an ample food source for the star.

My linka keeps my back glass spotless without ever having to clean it. good luck and keep us posted

I know that they are hard to keep, but i thought i would give it a try. He's been in the tank now for a little over a day. Still doing very well. He kinda camped out on a rock when i put him in, been there since. Just moving a little bit. Still no signs of bad acclimation.

Not on my part anyway....
