I recently purchased an open brain and in the first day it's gone from being reasonably contracted, to fully expanded, and now back to contracted. Is this normal? Nothing about the tank parameters really changed over this time period. I dont know if that indicates a problem or not.

Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Have you moved the open brain at all? The amount of light they recieve seems to affect how far mine expands. The farther up it is, the less it expands. Since I moved mine down, it has expanded to about 1.5"-2" of red edge. Water flow could also be a factor. Try giving it indirect water movement and see if that helps.

no, havent moved it. The light and the current were pretty constant across the time period.

I did add some top off RO/DI water (about 2 gallons) from my local grocery store. Usually I make my own but the membrane in my RO/DI is bad and I'm waiting on a replacement. I noticed that this morning the alkalinity has dropped from 9.0 to 8.2 overnight. Hard to tell where the PH is (around 8.0) with color tests but it looks slightly lower too. I'm wondering if that water has something to do with it. 2 gallons out of 75 seems very minimal....
