Di you convert a Fish only tank to a reef tank using a tank that was ever treated with copper?
Have you had success with your reef or if not do you think the prior copper treatment might be the reason?

I currently have a 55G that was a freshwater tank at one time in which I used copper medications. I believe I washed it out with soap and then a chlorine solution and rinsed - a few times. It is a FOWLR connected to my reef tank system.

I'll admit it. I think I used some kind of copper medication with the tank I have now and some of the base rock in it. The tank was a FO setup in '90. I tore the tank down in '92. The tank went through many moves and water changes during this time(college). I pulled the dusty coral pieces last year from the basement and built my reef. I believe my reef is a success.

It's your gamble though using old substrate. I would'nt think the tank/equipment would be bad if you cleaned it well.
