I bought the cheapest Kodak digital for $300 and got a $100 rebate. Pictures not bad, but can't do closeups like all the better cameras can do. (Canadian pricing)

I dont know about taking pics of a tank but you can get the Olympus D510zoom which has 2.1 megapixels for $310 delivered at zerodeliver.com Of course they are back ordered till tuesday, but I am waiting for mine now. Also if you wanna go cheaper and get it at the store they sell the olympus 1.3 megapixel Brio at circuit city for that price as well. Of course you get what you pay for and my suggestion for close ups would be the Olympus 2040 This sells for around $450-$550 depending on where you go. but more people on this board have better experience taking TANK shots than I.

REEF-ER,
I have a Sony DSC-S30 and it takes really nice pictures, and I spent about $300 on it, but to get the really good close ups unfortunately you will have to pay some $$$. I have been drooling over the Nikon Coolpix 990 for a while, but have just had this camera for 6 mths

Wolf Camera has some great digital cameras, but like I said $$$

for just a bit more you can get a nikon coolpix 775. it has the macro mode automatically. it's minimum focus distance is 4 cm.
i bought mine for 450 bucks. then spent 70 bucks on ebay for a 128 meg flashcard.
nice. now i make little movies of my tank.
only complaints are the camera is sooo little, and that the color shifts a little red when taking pics of my tank. i think it overcompensates for actinic lights.

got my fuji finepix 1400 (3x optical zoom) last x'mas for 250 with 50 rebate. was selling at goodguys at 299. found an online store that sells for 250, got print out, show it to them and get the price down to 250. went home, do a search and found the 50 bucks rebate coupon. Whole thing comes out to 199.

only 1.3 magapix. but works fine with me. it also has a marco mode to take close up pics. (don't even consider anything with digital zoom, it is just like croping a picture on your computer, you lose resolution. just consider the opitcal zoom) I guess it is a lot cheaper now with all these new models coming out.

Oh and don't use cheap batteries. It wouldn't even run on them. Use the most expensive kind and it will run for weeks.
