I have had a branching frogspawn now for about 5 months. It origially had 5 heads but about a month ago i lost 2 of them. Then the other day ive noticed a nother head is receding...Any suggestions??
How is your lighting and current?, water parameters? Mine seems to prefer moderate lighting and moderate current which keeps it's sweepers in check. Do you fed it at all? I don't feed mine at all anymore because when I did it would grab the food item and then let it go. It must be getting enough nutrients from the lighting alone, because all the heads are full and growing. If it starts to slime up, siphon off as much as possible and keep a mild current on because it will spread very rapidly.
I definitely feed mine. I use small pieces of shrimp (about pea size) and chopsticks to get it right near each mouth. I can watch each polyp swallow the food.
Moderate lighting and moderate flow is key. Mine has survived many bumps and falls. If anyone has any good ideas how to mount the sucker I would be much obliged. The tentacles should sway gently in the flow. Mine is in the flow of a powerhead on a wavemaker and it expands wonderfully in this case. Mine is also about 26" from a 400W MH bulb.
My forgspawn (euphylia paradivisa) has split once on each of the original heads, and two are about to split again.
Check Ca and Alk levels. When in check, they will grow well.
esmithiii, for mounting the frogspawn, I used some PVC pipe and it has worked out great.
I cut a 4" length of 1" pvc tubing (length depends on depth of DSB). The mounting end is cut vertically with a bandsaw (any saw will do) with about 6 cuts around 2" deep. This end is now very flexible and I take out a couple of splines to make room for the hard coral. The remaining splines will spread out and exert small pressure to keep the coral upright.
