You know problems come up when your on vacation or at 3:00 AM. Well one Rio 800 burned when I was on vacation 2 weeks ago and a second spewed smoke a few days ago - at 3:00 AM. These are replacements of rio's that just stopped working within the last 6 months. So can I draw the conclusion that within 6 months Rio 800's will either stop working or burn?

My wife wants me to get rid of everything because of the "fire hazard"!!

Lets hear it for Maxijets!!!!!!!!! I have 2 1000's from at least 7 years ago.

My Rio 2500 is just 2 months old and sounds terrible. I have cleaned everything and it stays just as noisy...like a bearing going out!

I won't buy any Powerhead if it's not maxijet. Actually, because of the Rio's, I haven't had the guts to try any other brand other than MJ's.

i had an extra rio pump i found in my closet so i decided to use it in my tank. within 3 days the noise coming from it was so loud i had to take it out because it was stressing my scooter blenny. i tried cleaning it too but it didn't work. i love my maxijets. they're half the size and are very quiet.

FYI, I used a Rio 2500 and one day, put my hand in the tank, and got ZAPPED!

Shocked the hell out of me...

Well, since fishes do not "touch" the ground, I am not sure how much of the current would they felt? Anyone knows the answer to that?

Why is it that most LFS mostly sell RIOs and similar crap. Does your LFS have quality drygoods. I have to drive an hour.

the hagen ones are good too, silent and i like how they mount to the side of the tank better than the maxijet (less area taken up) on the other hand.. it doesnt allow you to aim the flow to the side like mjs do..

FWIW... I have two Hagen (Aquaclear 802) PHs that have been running for 6 months with no problems at all and are very quiet.

I also have three external-hang-on filters from aquaclear (two in FW and one in SW). Two of them have been running for years with no problems (you should clean the impeller about once a month so you don't risk the motor clogging...) and one for 6 months. One of them is a little noisy, but the other two are really quiet.

Just to clarify, the 3 replacements were not purchased but sent as replacements (no charge from Champion who I highly reccomend).

I am replaceing these pumps with maxi 900's.

I selected the Rio's because they had the adapter to connect to the air traps for the CPR overflows. I rigged something that works much better with a maxijet - and I bet it wont be "smokin" any time soon.

Instead of having to remove all my tanks, my wife is getting the ADT home security system to call the fire department when the tanks start to burn!
