I've heard these bad boys are super tough fish, and can hang with triggers and the like.

Anyone have one of these? I realize they're not exactly a fish that you would want in your reef, but I figured I'd ask here just in case someone had one. Just curious.

Peace,

Yeah, tough fish & beautiful tang. Would only try if you had 400+ gallons. These guys get BIG.

Come from the same surge zones as powder blues, so while they are quite a bit more hardy, they still need plenty of macro and a bunch of oxygen in the water.

Yes, large tank(250+, 7+ feet), excellent water quality. Very active swimmers. Quite ornery when they want to be, hence yes they can hang with more agressive fish, but make sure you can meet their requirements first.

Tom, you seem to answer my questions in every single thread I start. Thanks.

Lots of current, lots of oxygen, lots of macro algae, and lots of swimming space.

How fast do they grow? I have a 4" one that's been offered to me, and I have an empty cycled 5 foot tank.

Peace,

Chip

I've had one in my reef (500 ga.) for over two years now. He too was about 4" when I got him and is nearly twice that now. The largest Sohal I've seen 'in the flesh' I'd estimate at 14" but I've heard they get even larger. I've also read of a case where a large Sohal actually attacked and severely slashed the arm of it's owner. Mine is the undisputed king of my tank both in size and in temperment but has fortunately done no damage to me or the other tank inhabitants. If you add one, add it last. And don't even think of putting it in with another tang.
