I am replacing a bulk head in my sump area and need to shut the filtration system when doing this. The Bulk head needs to have a 90 deg. elbow glued in it and I was wondering how long does PVC cement need to dry before turnning filter back on. Was a bit worried about any glue vapors running through the tank. But I do not want the biology in the filter to die off either. The glue I am using in Oatley PVC Cement and Primer sold at Home Depot. Any one have any experience with plumbing repairs and how long to wait before starting system back up?

Oatley makes a quick dring PVC cement that is blue in color. It usually dries in under 5 minutes, but I am not sure about how long it takes to completely harden.

hi.
That's one advantage of using threaded bulkhead. However, I used slip bulkheads without any glue, and it does not seem to leak or cause any problem. YMMV.

If you use glue, let it dry for at least a day or two. In the mean time, you can use powerhead for internal circulation, etc...

To be safe, use carbon to pick up any VOC and other toxic compound in the glue.

Standard disclaimer applies: I am not responsible for anything, since I am speaking as if I don't care a squat about your tank or its inhabitants

Steve,
1 " Bulk heads are threaded on the outside for the crown nut, I understand. But the plumbing needs to slip into the bulk head and be glued, since it's a drian I not even going to try not gluing it. Anyone ever done a PVC plumbing repair on existin set up.

sorry to butt in, does anybody know if there exists a female hose barb adaptor that can screw onto the outside of the bulkhead...where the crown nut screws...?

thanks
